Basketball
Referees: They are the main officials of the game. they will be responsible for calling fouls and violation on the players of both teams and coaches. for example if there is to much contact while a player is trying to get the ball, the Referees will call the foul, by blowing his whistle. leading him in stopping the game.
Lead Referee: This type of referee is known as the (crew chief). he is in charge of the whole game. however there are 2 or 3 referees that will be calling the fouls and violation independently. But in terms of making a decision on a case of dispute it all goes to the Lead Referee to decide the decision. The Lead Referee wears the same outfit, meaning that one of the referees are the leader on out of the 3 that are on the court. For example, in the image, the ‘Crew Chief’ is the middle person that will be deciding weather to eject a player or if the point is converted after the buzzer.
Scorers: There can be a maximum of 2 scorers in a game depending of the rules of the league. There main job is to write down the stats of the game. for example writing down how many points the certain player has scored and missed, keeping there field goal percentage notified.
Timers: They are basically the referees in recording time. mostly there will be 2 people timing the game, for example one will be operating the game clock and the other one will be focusing on the shot clock. the shot clock operator will have to set a 24 second timer, while the other one will have to set the 10 minute quarters.
Football
The Referee: he is the most important out of the 4 officials on the football pitch. he is the only person that has a whistle and uses it to signal the beginning and the end of the play. for example this includes, kick-off, half-time, full-time, goals and fouls . also he is the only person that has the yellow and red card.
The Linesmen: There are a maximum of 2 linesmen. 1 one of side of the half and the other lines men on the other side of the half. They are responsible to call offside on there side of the half’s. They always carry a brightly coloured flag to signal when the player is off-side. They raise there flags when the ball goes of the pitch, when its an off-side play and when there is a corner kick.
The Fourth Official: This person keeps the track off all stoppages during the game. So this means at the end of the half, he informs the players how much time is left in that certain half by using a flashing number board.
Fifth Officials: Some times there is a vocal moment on the football pitch where they will need to include a fifth official. What he does is he include in-game replay in order to makes sure the referee has called the correct decision. For example if the ball crosses the goal line or not. he will decide if it was a goal or not.
Similarities
The one of the best similarity that basketball and football have is that they have a referee which decides on the fouls and its there to make the game fair for both teams. This is really important as it makes the game a lot safer. for example if there was not referees there would be no rules, leading to athletes fouling each other. By this happening it makes the game more safer.
Also the Timers and the Fourth official have a similar roll, as they have to work with time and the stoppage of the timer. This is important as it makes the game fair. Making sure there is no time being wasted.
Improvement of basketball : I would suggest a valid recommendation for the improvement of the sport is by adding a rule such as a 4 pointer rule. this will make a change on the court visually, by adding line outside the 3 pointer line. This would be fair as basketball player can shoot the ball from a deep range. By adding the 4 pointer line, this could make athletes improve there shooting as they would like to win the games more often with a big 4 pointer.
Improvement of Football: I would suggest when a player gaining a foul. for example by having a warning. The rules and regulation of football should add a green card, as the player will know he gains a warning instead of the referee talking to a player. This is a fast way to show that a player has gained a warning. After this situation the game and be resumed and played on.
